The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Rasmussen to a four-year contract worth $3.2 million per season.
At the conclusion of the season, Rasmussen was scheduled to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights and a $1.46 million cap hit.
With 11 goals and 23 points in 56 games this season, the 24-year-old is on pace for a career-best campaign.
With 29 points in 56 games the previous season, he had a stronger campaign but missed time because of a knee injury.
Rasmussen joined the Red Wings on a full-time basis in 2018–19 and left for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League the following season.
In 2021–22, he eventually made the transition to the NHL full-time, and he has averaged at least 20 points per season ever since.
The middle-six threat is a competent two-way center who has recently learned how to take advantage of his 6-foot-6 frame.
Rasmussen, who was selected ninth overall in the 2017 draft, is a physical player who can wreck havoc in front of the net and push players off the puck.
Rasmussen has improved his defensive skills significantly in the last several years, which has helped him become a more potent threat all around.
At the moment, the Red Wings are four points ahead of the New Jersey Devils and one point behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for the second wild-card spot.
The team has a winning streak of two games and has gone 6-3-1 over the previous ten games, giving them some prominence in the standings.
Detroit’s next game is scheduled for February 22 against the Colorado Avalanche, followed by a Saturday afternoon matchup with St. Louis.
They’ll play Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday at 6:00 PM ET to cap off the weekend.
