The Steelers are allegedly “open” to moving on from their Pro Bowl wide receiver, which means they may soon have another opening to fill. The team has a number of gaps to fill on its roster this offseason.
Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda reports that, for the proper price, Pittsburgh is willing to trade wide receiver Diontae Johnson, a third-round selection in 2019.
“While it’s not fair to say Johnson is on the trading block, several people tell me the Steelers are open to moving the receiver if they receive fair compensation,” writes Pauline.
Johnson has been the Steelers’ top receiver for the last few seasons, so the news is very unexpected.
But the 27-year-old has had two poor seasons in a row, totaling only 1,599 yards and five touchdowns.
Johnson even broke the record for the least fortunate record in the league in 2022: the most receptions by a player in a season without a touchdown (86).
Johnson’s contract is about to expire, so Pittsburgh could want to see what type of payment it can obtain for him now if it intends to part ways with him after 2024.
But Mark Kaboly of The Athletic thinks it may be the other way around.
