Six-time Pro Bowl Eagles defensive end announces retirement………………
Philadelphia Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, a six-time Pro Bowler for the Philadelphia Eagles, declared on Sunday that he is leaving the league.
In 2017, he assisted in leading the Eagles to their lone Super Bowl victory. In 2018, he had his best pro season, recording 10.5 sacks and 34 quarterback hits on his way to first-team All-Pro recognition.
“Journeying to the NFL allowed me to realize a long-held dream. In an Instagram statement on Sunday, Cox said, “But what I didn’t realize at the time is how much of an honor and privilege it would be to represent the city of Philadelphia and the Eagles organization for the next 12 seasons.”
The Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, general manager Howie Roseman, head coach Nick Sirianni, head coach Doug Pederson, team president Don Smolenski, a number of teammates, including Brandon Graham, Kelce, and Lane Johnson, as well as the team’s supporters were all thanked in his statement.
“I threw my all into this team and this community. Though I’m not sure what lies ahead for me, I’m incredibly appreciative of my time spent in Philadelphia and working with the Eagles organization,” the man wrote.
In 15 games, Cox, 33, recorded 5 sacks, 17 quarterback hits, and 36 quarterback pressures, maintaining his position as one of the Eagles’ best players in 2023.
One of the best defensive players in Eagles history is Cox. The only defensive tackles behind him in career sack totals are Reggie White, Trent Cole, Clyde Simmons, and Graham. He also holds the franchise record for sacks (70) and Pro Bowl appearances (6).
“The fact that Fletcher has even more of an impact behind the scenes is what really sets him apart. The six-time team captain played a significant role in our building’s championship culture establishment. As cruel as he was on the field, Lurie said in a statement, “he was a master of his craft and over the years, he served as a big brother and mentor to so many young players.”
He set the bar high every single day, whether it was in the locker room or on the practice field, demonstrating his deep respect for the game of football and the legacy he would one day leave behind. Because of him, that benchmark will endure for a very long time.
Cox, a Mississippi State product who was selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2012 draft, has spent his whole playing career in Philadelphia. 188 games in his career during the regular season is the second-most appearances by an Eagles defensive player, only surpassed by Graham (195).
In 2017, he assisted in leading the Eagles to their lone Super Bowl victory. In 2018, he had his best pro season, recording 10.5 sacks and 34 quarterback hits on his way to first-team All-Pro recognition.
