Among the biggest headlines of the 2023 season was the Detroit Lions. They nearly made it to their first-ever Super Bowl and played in their first NFC Championship game in decades. But they suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers. Many were feeling confident about their chances in 2024 as the offseason got underway. Mike Greenberg of ESPN disagrees with such optimism.
Greenberg makes two claims. First of all, he believes that the Green Bay Packers are just superior.
“I believe they overlooked their window. Their best chance to win the title, in my opinion, was last year. They seem to be losing ground in their own division, in my opinion. Green Bay is now, in my opinion, superior to them.

The Packers’ efforts to rebuild after dealing Aaron Rodgers to the Jets impressed him. His second point is that we’ve made similar statements about other clubs in the past. After the Chiefs upset victory in the game that lasted 13 seconds, we were certain that the Buffalo Bills would bounce back. People assumed that Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase of the Bengals would be leading the AFC. Neither of those events took place. In the NFL, nothing is guaranteed.
Does Greenberg Have A Point?
Who has the superior team is up for debate. The Detroit Lions have acquired several quality players in free agency, and they are not without talent. But his second point is still relevant. In the NFL, nothing is guaranteed. The Bills are recreating the entire team since they are still unable to overcome their setbacks. Cincinnati’s youthful club is now paying the price for the injuries they endured last season. After Dan Marino’s second-season Super Bowl performance, everyone assumed he would win several championships.
Detroit lost out on a chance last year. Will they have any other windows at all? Perhaps not, but in the NFL, nothing is certain.
