Three of the Los Angeles Chargers’ most desirable seats…………………………..
In 2023, the Los Angeles Chargers were a complete bust, finishing 5-12 and missing the playoffs. To turn things around, they brought in Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of Michigan and a former San Francisco 49ers player.
That will not be easy, though, since the Chargers have voids in their squad after Los Angeles had to let go of many outstanding players in order to free up cap space. In light of that, these three Chargers are expected to be in the driver’s seat by 2024.
Joey Bosa, a linebacker
This offseason, Bosa was thought to be a trade or cut candidate; however, he and the Chargers settled on a reworked contract.
The third-round selection in the 2016 NFL Draft is among the top pass-rushers in the entire field when healthy. In his eight seasons with the Chargers, Bosa has accumulated 67 sacks and made four trips to the Pro Bowl. He has, however, missed 14 games due to hamstring, foot, and toe problems throughout the previous two seasons.
Bosa, 28, might be a cap casualty in 2025 if he doesn’t maintain good health and return to his elite level. The Chargers will save $25.36 million if they let him go in the upcoming summer.
Quarterback Quentin Johnston
Johnston recently stated to the media that he is “due for a breakout” in 2024, but it’s difficult to take him seriously given how poorly his debut season went.
In 17 games, the 21st overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft recorded 38 receptions for 431 yards, two touchdown catches, and three drops.
In addition to releasing veteran starter Mike Williams, Los Angeles recently dealt six-time Pro Bowler Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears for a 2024 fourth-round pick (No. 110 overall). Williams agreed to a contract with the Jets.
Johnston, 22, hasn’t proven he can be a good substitute thus far.
Anticipate the Chargers to select a wideout in the draft once more. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. predicted that they would choose Malik Nabers of LSU with the fifth overall choice in his most recent mock draft. In 2023, the 20-year-old was named to the first team of All-America.
Football player Trey Pipkins III
Pipkins III agreed to a three-year, $21.75 million contract in 2023. After his retraction from the previous season, this seems like an overspend.
He gave up a career-high 49 pressures and the fourth-most sacks in the league (nine) in 17 games, according to Pro Football Focus. The Chargers’ offensive line struggled in 2023, and his subpar performance was a factor in the unit’s 12th-highest QB hits total (53) in the league.
The 27-year-old Pipkins III has to straighten out next season. Justin Herbert, the quarterback for the team, needs to be protected. The Chargers didn’t win another game after the former Pro Bowler’s season-ending right index finger fracture during a Week 13 loss to the Denver Broncos.
