Tyler Boyd’s contract with the Steelers was held up on price because ‘he wants to get paid more than they’re offering him.’……………………………
Since the beginning of free agency, the Pittsburgh Steelers are allegedly trying to get receiver Tyler Boyd back to his hometown. Currently looking for a new team, the Clairton High School alumnus played for the Cincinnati Bengals for the first eight years of his career. The 29-year-old, who turns 30 in November, just finished his 2023 campaign with two touchdowns and 667 receiving yards. A recent report claimed that not all members of the team’s front management agreed with the idea of praising the seasoned receiver. One Steelers insider claims that money is the reason behind the delay in a possible agreement between Boyd and the team.
On Thursday, Mark Kaboly from The Athletic spoke on The Fan Morning Show on 93.7 The Fan to discuss some of the team’s offseason decisions. According to Kaboly, the team and Boyd are at a standstill.
“They’re trying to wait out Tyler Boyd,” he stated. “I’m not entirely sure how this will work out in the end. I am aware that he desires a higher salary than what they are giving him.”
The New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs could suddenly enter negotiations with the former University of Pittsburgh receiver, according to a recent article by Kaboly on X. Since then, though, Mike Williams, a former wide receiver for the Los Angeles Chargers, has been hosted by the Jets, who won’t allow him leave the building without signing him. Since Kaboly hinted that the Chiefs would be interested in Boyd, the team has also expanded their wide receiver group. Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, a receiver for the Arizona Cardinals and former Baltimore Raven, was added to the lineup by the two-time defending Super Bowl champions.
Although their respective receiving rooms appear to be full with those additions, that doesn’t mean the Jets or Chiefs are out of the running to sign Boyd. Like the Steelers, another team in need of a receiver may still be lurking in the shadows, but they are not happy with the amount Boyd’s camp is asking.
After shipping wide receiver Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers, Pittsburgh now needs a wide receiver. The only players on the roster who caught passes for Pittsburgh in the 2023 season are George Pickens and Calvin Austin III. Van Jefferson was also added by the club, but the Super Bowl winner hasn’t come close to replicating his breakthrough 2021 season, in which he caught 50 passes for 802 yards. Moving Johnson might be seen as a greater testament to coach Dan Quinn’s belief that wide receiver Tyler Pickens will be the starting quarterback in 2024, but it doesn’t seem sensible to leave out another capable wide receiver.
The Steelers are holding out for another receiver with patience.
Kaboly believes there’s a good chance Omar Khan still has some tricks up his sleeve to sign a new receiver. According to reports, Pittsburgh has investigated San Francisco 49ers player Brandon Aiyuk. Considering the draft capital that would probably be needed to acquire him and the financial implications of signing him to a new contract, Kaboly wasn’t sure if that would be the best course of action for the organization.
There are still alternatives available for free agents. Some have proposed that the team try to make a lowball offer to Odell Beckham Jr., especially if he is available for a low cost. This offseason, Khan has demonstrated at the quarterback position that he isn’t scared to make risky decisions. Examples of these decisions include offering Russell Wilson a veteran minimum salary and forfeiting a conditional sixth-round selection in order to acquire Justin Fields.
Talented pass catchers have frequently been acquired by Pittsburgh through the draft. They might be considering a member of the 2024 draft class to cover the present gap. After his team’s Pro Day exercise, University of Texas receiver Xavier Worthy had a lengthy meeting with the team.
The senior decision-makers in Pittsburgh appear to be conscious of the potential gap at number two receiver and are attempting to fill it. Time will tell if Khan’s patience pays off as he has been waiting patiently for the perfect transaction.
Which wide receiver do you believe the Steelers should choose?
