Jordan Travis, a former football star for FSU, shares heartfelt reflections on his career with Mike Norvell…………………………..
He truly did make a difference in my life. He gave me a lot of advice about how to approach people and about football in general.”
As former head coach Jimbo Fisher’s tenure came to an end and the coaching staff that followed tried to fill the gaps in the program, the Florida State Seminoles had some hard times. Prior to signing current coach Mike Norvell, the Seminoles had seasons of 5-7 and 6-7. However, after three years, they were back at the top, winning the ACC in 2023 and ending 13-1.
Jordan Travis, a transfer from Louisville and former standout quarterback, was brought in during those dark years. In the beginning of his Seminoles career, he split reps with James Blackman and McKenzie Milton. He flashed occasionally, but it was never truly his offensive, and prior to Norvell officially handing him the reins in 2022, he was unable to establish any momentum. Travis was the ‘Noles’ primary under center as they went 23–4.
In an interview conducted before to FSU NFL Pro Day, Travis discussed his experience working with Norvell as a mentor now that his time in garnet and gold is done and he is focused on the NFL.
“I mean, I believed that guy was insane. And that’s it. That was undoubtedly my initial thought. But it was really great to observe how he loves and coaches us,” Travis remarked of Norvell. It is very remarkable to witness the leader he is—not only on the field but also off it, for his family, as a father, and as a husband to his wife. And because of his humility and the love he has for everyone in this town,
Travis had an incredible season last year, finishing sixth in the Heisman rankings despite missing time due to a severe leg injury. He expressed gratitude for having met Norvell and remarked that he transformed his life.
He truly did make a difference in my life. He taught me a lot about football and life in general, as well as how to handle people and go about my daily business. So yes, dude, I’m really happy that we met.”
The Seminoles are deep into spring training, and competition is already on in the quarterback room over who will start under center in the upcoming season. To compete with Brock Glenn, FSU added Oregon State transfer DJ Uiagalelei and freshman Luke Kromenhoek. There’s no doubt that Norvell will have a good influence on the next round of quarterbacks to pass through the program.
