San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York is getting ready to take over as the team’s major owner by purchasing the required ownership from his mother, Denise DeBartolo York, according to Ben Fischer of the Sports Business Journal.
“The transaction and title change is subject to NFL approval, expected during the league meetings underway today in Orlando,” Fischer told reporters. “It’s not known precisely how much of the club Jed York will own individually after this deal, but the family owns more than 95% of the 49ers, valued at $6B by Forbes in 2023.”
Fischer also reports that York will stay on as the team’s CEO, continuing to have direct control over both the commercial side of the organization and football operations. John York and Denise DeBartolo York will continue to be the team’s shareholders. Since 2010, Jed York has been in his present role.
The selection of general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan was greatly aided by York. The 49ers have reached two Super Bowls and four NFC Championship Games since their appointments in 2017. Still, in spite of their accomplishments, the team has failed to win the coveted sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy.
