Gunner Stockton is starting a crucial spring practice in 2024………….
This week marks the start of spring practice for the Georgia football team. Every year, clubs use this time to their advantage to gain a better sense of how their roster will appear heading into the new campaign and to get a first look at some of the incoming freshmen. With Carson Beck back, one position where the Bulldogs won’t have to worry about who will start is quarterback, but it will still be a crucial time of year for the men up behind Beck. Just for Gunner Stockton, specifically.
Beck returned to lead the team for another season, but the Bulldogs also lost Brock Vandargiff to the transfer portal, which bumped Stockton up one spot in the depth chart. As the unofficial second-string quarterback going into spring practice, he may not be competing for the starting role, but this spring will be a crucial one for his college career.
Like most reserve quarterbacks, Stockton saw very little action outside of the Orange Bowl versus Florida State. He did, however, receive some live reps during that game. But now that he’s advanced in the depth chart, Stockton will get a significant amount of playing time this spring.
As previously stated, Stockton is vying for a hold on the depth chart for both the 2024 and 2025 seasons, even though he may not be fighting for the starting position this offseason.
This season, there will be 12 teams in the college football postseason, and Georgia will undoubtedly be vying for one of those spots. Playoff-caliber teams will benefit from a prolonged season as a result, which raises the value of depth on college football squads. The spring training this year will be crucial for Stockton to demonstrate that he is prepared to take on a bigger workload at the position, regardless of whether an injury or Beck’s decision to withdraw from the game calls for Stockton to play.
Building on that, Stockton will have a huge window of opportunity to demonstrate that he is prepared to lead the offense going forward throughout spring practice. Although it might not happen this season, Stockton will be the talk of the town as the program’s next starter when the 2025 season arrives the following year. Everyone understood that Beck was next in line when Stetson Bennett formally left Georgia. When Beck eventually files for the NFL, a productive off-season of development would put Stockton in that same conversation and provide the roster better leadership.
Stockton’s success as a collegiate student-athlete may not be imminent, but it does begin this spring. an occasion for him to increase his self-confidence and that of his peers. Stockton will play a major role in ensuring that the foundation remains strong over the next few seasons, which head coach Kirby Smart has built into his team. Dawg supporters should be thrilled to hear any good news from the Gunner Stockton camp this spring because of these reasons.
