In the offseason, the New York Giants signed veteran running back Devin Singletary in free agency to replace top player Saquon Barkley. They might not be done assembling talent for their backfield, either. The exciting mid-round running back prospect Trey Benson of FSU is allegedly of interest to the Giants.
RB Trey Benson of FSU is allegedly a draft pick that the Giants are considering.
KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson reports that the Giants have shown “heavy interest” in Benson. The 216-pound, 6-foot rusher is thought to be among the top running backs available in the 2024 NFL Draft class.
Benson has a top-30 visit scheduled with the Dallas Cowboys, among other NFL teams, so the G-Men are not the only NFC East team interested in him.
Benson is a highly skilled athlete.
At the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, Benson showed himself to be among the most dynamic running backs in this year’s draft class. After running the 40-yard sprint in 4.39 seconds, he received a 9.77 relative athletic score (RAS). Among 1,765 running backs from 1987 to 2024, his RAS placed him 41st.
What qualities might Benson provide the Giants?
Benson would bring amazing tackle-breaking skills to the Big Apple in addition to his athleticism. Pro Football Focus reports that in his last 310 carries over the previous two seasons, he forced 124 missed tackles. Over the previous two seasons, Benson amassed 1,899 running yards, 23 total touchdowns, and zero fumbles while earning an overall PFF Grade of 91.3.
Following two injury-plagued undergraduate seasons at Oregon, Benson relocated to Florida State, where he went on to dominate the ACC. The 21-year-old is among the best running back prospects in his class going into the NFL Draft. Despite the possibility of becoming the first running back off the board, his current projection is to be selected in the third round of the draft.
In the third round, the Giants had the 70th overall pick. Benson is a player they might seek and include in the lineup with Eric Gray, the fifth-round pick from the previous year, and Singletary. Benson is considered a long-term option to take over for Singletary and lead the backfield, but he may possibly make an early contribution in the starting lineup. Singletary has a three-year contract in place.
