Saints and QB Kellen Mond have an agreement.
This early in the offseason, the New Orleans Saints’ roster has an unusual number of quarterbacks. On Friday, the Saints announced that they had reached an agreement with quarterback Kellen Mond. Previously, Mond worked with quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko and was a third-round choice of the Minnesota Vikings. He was the offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak’s player.
After just one season with the Vikings, Mond, 24, was let go along with Mike Zimmer’s coaching staff when Kubiak was fired. Since then, he has played for the Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns. He attended the same university as Dennis Allen, the head coach of the Saints, and graduated from Texas A&M with the school record for career passing yards (9,661).
Mond enters a competition with Jake Haener and Nathan Peterman to be Derek Carr’s backup. How Taysom Hill enters the picture is still unknown. Although Mond lacks the expertise in Kubiak’s offense that a more seasoned backup would, he will still not jeopardize Carr’s job security. The necessity to select a quarterback in the latter rounds of the 2024 NFL draft is also diminished by his existence.
It was always a long shot for the Saints to choose a quarterback after making such a big commitment to Carr, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t take a pass on a highly regarded QB if they got the chance. Haener is still expected to dominate both Peterman and Mond in training camp and be the clear second-best option to begin the season. The Saints will view this as a victory if Mond can assist Carr in breaking down video and grasping Kubiak’s scheme a bit faster. However, don’t count on Mond to start a lot of games in the autumn.
