Gymnast Morgan Price makes history by becoming the first athlete from an HBCU to win a national collegiate title.
On Friday, gymnast Morgan Price made history by becoming the first player to win a national collegiate championship from a historically Black college or university team.
With an all-around score of 39.225, the student from Fisk University won the championship and made history as “the first USAG Collegiate National Champion from an HBCU!” stated USA Gymnastics. She was competing at the USA Gymnastics 2024 Women’s Collegiate National Championships in West Chester, Pennsylvania, alongside competitors from 12 collegiate teams.
After completing high school, Price enrolled in Nashville’s Fisk University and became a member of the first HBCU intercollegiate team. According to ESPN, she first signed with Arkansas before deciding to attend Fisk when Coach Corrine Tarver posed the straightforward question, “Do you want to make history?”
The gymnastics team has sold out meets, competed on ESPN, and attracted high-profile media attention since its founding.
“I’ve discovered that being in your culture is fun. We have a great support network and a lot of eyes on us because we are the first. It was a lot of fun to see the supporters and young girls encouraging us,” Price remarked in 2023.
“THE PRICE IS RIGHT,” her team wrote on social media to commemorate her victory. Write her name in the books of history.
Price will compete in the vault, bars, and floor individual event finals on Sunday.
