After a frightening collision with a teammate on Monday, Tyler O’Neill, an outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, had to leave the game and required several stitches.
At Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, in the seventh inning of their team’s 6-0 loss to the Cleveland Guardians, O’Neill and Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers collided in shallow left field.
With a fly ball to left field lifted by Estevan Florial, Devers and Ceddanne Rafaela raced out in the direction of O’Neill. Backpedaling, Devers made the catch, slamming O’Neill in the face with the back of his head.
Here are a few different views of the terrifying collision.
O’Neill had to be assisted off the field because he was bleeding inside. He never showed back. Cora informed reporters that the slugger required eight sutures following the game.
“T.O., he’s got a huge cut.” Cora stated, “We’ll see what happens next. He got eight stitches.” “He is following the protocol for concussions. I hope everything is going well. Same thing with Raffy. I believe he just got smacked quite hard. We’ll see, but he says he feels well. He will experience the same thing.
O’Neill was acquired by the Red Sox from the St. Louis Cardinals in an offseason deal. He’s exceeded their expectations in every way. O’Neill has eight RBI, seven home runs, and 14 games under his belt going into Monday’s match.
