Shane Steichen, the coach of the Indianapolis Colts, says Anthony Richardson “is in a really good spot.”
Every Colts fan in the world wants to witness this. On the practice field, Anthony Richardson will be passing to his teammates.
Recall that Indianapolis selected the extremely athletic yet undeveloped Richardson with the fourth choice in the NFL Draft exactly one year prior. The former Florida Gator, Richardson, shown some early-season talent last year. However, ailments later overshadowed his debut. After being awarded a starting position by the Colts, Richardson experienced a concussion and a shoulder ailment.
His season was ultimately curtailed by surgery. However, after seven months, he is well.
Regarding Richardson’s situation, Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters, “He’s in a really good spot.” “He’s in a really good place, but we had some really wonderful conversations that I will definitely keep private. The shoulder feels OK. It should be ready for the drills that we previously discussed. We’ll set a restriction, but he’ll be throwing outside. Although we’ll keep an eye on it and make sure we handle it wisely, he’s in a great position.
Just like this year, quarterbacks dominated discussions around the 2023 NFL Draft. To the Panthers, Bryce Young was the top pick. The NFL Rookie of the Year, C.J. Stroud, was then chosen by the Texans. Richardson was selected by the Colts with the fourth overall pick after he impressed everyone at the NFL Scouting Combine. He resembled Lamar Jackson in size and height. At 6 feet 4 inches and 244 pounds, he was designed to take a defensive end’s blows. Besides, he could outrun the safety. His combine performance was actually on par with the best of the cornerbacks or receivers.
Richardson’s lack of field experience was his lone criticism. At Florida, he had only started 13 games. But as he took over the Colts offense, Richardson appeared to be in control. He did, however, strain his AC joint in game five. His season ended two weeks later when he had shoulder surgery.
The Colts’ campaign was not over. In the season finale, Indianapolis competed for the AFC South championship, led by Gardner Minshew. However, Stroud and the Texans prevailed over the Colts. In free agency, Minshew joined the Raiders. Joe Flacco, who saw a career rebirth with the Browns last fall as he relieved injured quarterback Deshaun Watson, was signed by Indianapolis in the meanwhile.
One of the NFL’s most competitive divisions is quickly developing into the AFC South. Additionally, all of the starting quarterbacks are gifted young men. The seasoned member of the group is Trevor Lawrence of the Jaguars. He was selected first overall in the 2021 Draft. Stroud and Richardson were among the top choices in 2023. Will Levis and the Titans are another option. Last year, Levis was predicted to go to the first round, but he fell too early in the second round.
Now that the optional workouts are underway, Steichen stated he will likely need to prevent Richardson from attempting to overdo it.
“He’s a competitor, really,” Steichen said to the media. “I believe that the majority of guys who aspire to be great competitors will want to push themselves; once again, we’ll just need to keep an eye on it and proceed accordingly.”
Additionally, he’ll have time to focus on the tiny things that most people overlook. Using the information he’s heard in meetings, Richardson may practice his huddle techniques with his teammates.
It’s sizable. (But) Surely, it’s nothing new for him? stated Steichen. He is now going through such meetings and has heard the terminology. It’s been wonderful because he has a solid basis moving into this offseason and the upcoming season after simply going through it and quizzing him on it.
