Texas HC Steve Sarkisian has a strong opinion of the program’s ethos.
There is no denying what Texas’ head coach Steve Sarkisian has accomplished.
coach has gradually but steadily reestablished the Longhorns as a national contender, and the previous season, coach led his squad to within a few plays of the national title. In the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Sugar Bowl, Texas fell to Washington 37–31.
With a wealth of talent returning for 2024, including starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, Sarkisian’s squad should be a strong contender for a national championship this autumn. There’s no denying that the Longhorns will have talent.
For Sarkisian, though, their mindset during the season is more crucial, and he believes he is creating something truly amazing in that aspect.
“You do realize that we will have a lot of talent? We’re not worried about our talent, Sarkisian recently stated, according to ESPN. “It’s ensuring that we perform at our peak during crucial game moments. You perform at your peak when you can rely on the person standing next to you or when you can hold them accountable and don’t feel pressured to act independently or in an inappropriate manner.” That is how we must live each and every day.
In this instance, Sark is essentially discussing the program’s culture. An old proverb says, “It’s not about the X’s and O’s, it’s about the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s.” That is essentially a football proverb regarding skill, but even the greatest talent is useless if a team cannot support one another, operate as a unit, and prioritize becoming a family above all else.
That’s precisely what Texas has, according to Sarkisian.
“We’ve done a great job on it over the past four years, in my opinion, and I’m not trying to sound cocky when I say that. I simply think that,” Sarkisian said. “We have the best college football culture, in my opinion, but we have to start over every year. Culture is not something that simply persists from year to year.”
In 2024, Texas will need to get its cultural act together immediately. In Week 2, the Longhorns will play the reigning champion Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor following a game against Colorado State to start the season.
