At the world gymnastics competition, Simone Biles creates history by mastering a difficult vault.
On Sunday, Simone Biles made history by successfully completing one of the hardest vaults in gymnastics on her comeback to international competition.
At the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Belgium, the four-time Olympic gold medallist made history by being the first woman to land an international Yurchenko double pike vault.
The 26-year-old can be seen in the video running down the runway, rounding off onto a springboard, backhandspringing onto the vaulting table, and performing two double flips to finish. The audience erupted in thunderous applause as she stood up.
It has been rated as the hardest vault in women’s gymnastics, with a difficulty rating of 6.4, higher than any other vault, according to Reuters.
According to Team USA, it will also be dubbed Biles II because it was finished in an international competition, bringing her total skill set to five.
Only male gymnasts have performed this vault in an international competition before, and Biles last performed it in the United States in 2018.
There’s also a reason why it hasn’t been attempted before. In2021, Laurent Landi, her coach, stated on “60 Minutes” that it would be a “very, very challenging” move.
It’s frightening because people can get hurt, according to Landi. “Your ankles may get harmed if you make a quick landing. This vault is quite risky.”Landi
