Buckeyes Win Series Finale, 10-6 Over Spartans
Columbus, Ohio – In the last game of their three-game series, Ohio State baseball (20-20, 7-8 Big Ten) defeated Michigan State (19-21, 7-8 Big Ten) 10-6.
Game Synopsis
After a three-run home run, the Spartans established a 3-0 lead over the Buckeyes in the top of the second inning.
In the bottom of the inning, Tyler Pettorini led off with a triple down the right field line. After that, Matthew Graveline was walked to place Buckeyes runners on the corners. Mitchell Okuley’s sacrifice fly gave Pettorini a point, bringing the Spartan lead to three, 3-1.
Trey Lipsey doubled to right field in the bottom of the third inning with one out. Henry Kaczmar moved aside
After two Buckeye mistakes and a groundout, the Spartans took the lead again in the top of the fifth, defeating Ohio State 6-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Nick Giamarusti was hit by a pitch to advance to second base. Giamarusti scored on another double from Lipsey, cutting Michigan’s advantage to two, 6-4. Then Kaczmar advanced Lipsey with a single. A Spartan error allowed Lipsey to score, cutting the Buckeyes’ deficit to just one run, 6-5. With a double to left field, Hunter Rosson advanced both runners into scoring position. Kaczmar was scored by an RBI groundout by Pettorini, tying the game at 6-6. Ohio State took its first lead of the game when Matthew Graveline hit a bloop single to the Spartan shortstop, sending Rosson home.
Throughout the day, Lipsey, Kaczmar, Rosson, Pettorini, and Mershon each had two hits.
With two RBI apiece, Kaczmar and Rosson lead the Buckeyes in RBIs.
In 4.1 innings, without recording a decision, Gavin DeVooght gave up six runs on five hits while striking out four.
It was Blaine Wynk’s (1-0) first victory on the mound. In 2.2 scoreless innings thrown, he walked one and struck out two.
