On July 1, 2025, star player Kirill Kaprizov of the Minnesota Wild will be eligible to sign an extension. Though that doesn’t happen very soon, the Wild organization doesn’t have a lot of time to show Kaprizov that they can develop a contender. And that’s precisely what they will need to do if they want to keep him on board. If not, it appears that Kaprizov is considering leaving to play for a rival team.
Owner Craig Leipold and General Manager Bill Guerin have both expressed concern over Kaprizov’s future. Given that wingers are competitive players, it is imperative to assemble a winning squad as soon as possible. Although he may be the most crucial component, Kaprizov needs the right players surrounding him in order to not only qualify for the playoffs but also survive past one round.
Kaprizov has already hinted at his intention to consider all of his options.
Regarding his future in Minnesota, Kaprizov said he liked the players and the franchise. There’s a comfort level and assurance that the team can compete. He needs to see more before deciding, though, as he was also let down by the way this season unfolded.
During a news conference, he clarified:
I dislike disclosing the specifics of what happened. I prefer to just be in the moment. We have a lot of talented guys, in my opinion. We always have a shot to win games, advance to the postseason, and compete there. I’m not sure. Next year, we’ll see what transpires. If we don’t make the playoffs, I’m not sure. Next year, I hope we make the playoffs.
Not that Kaprizov is announcing his departure. Having said that, it’s quite evident that he won’t commit to a squad that isn’t committed to success. He has a limited amount of patience, so if the Wild are unable to place themselves in the top 16 and eventually the top 8, he may try to sign with a team that can.
