Switching DT Damonic Williams choose Oklahoma over LSU and Texas
The Oklahoma Sooners triumphed greatly in the transfer market. Damonic Williams made the decision to transfer to Norman from TCU.
According to reports, Oklahoma, Texas, LSU, and Missouri were the final four states in the recruiting competition, with Texas and Oklahoma receiving the most attention.
The move is strange in certain aspects but not in others. Williams has chosen to forgo playing for a playoff squad that is poised for further success as a result of this decision. It reminds me a little bit of Texas’s failed attempt to recruit Oschaun Mathis, an edge rusher.
The decision makes sense in other respects. From a distance, it appeared like Williams was biased against Oklahoma before entering the portal. That’s why I said in my writing that I wouldn’t hold my breath if Texas prevailed in their pursuit of the gifted defensive tackle. Some people continued to believe that the Longhorns would win the race.
In the end, Williams ultimately selected the squad to which it seemed he meant to transfer.
For the Sooners, who have little buffer against a demanding schedule, the addition is a major benefit. In addition to games against Tennessee and Alabama at home, Oklahoma will play games away from Norman against Texas, Auburn, Ole Miss, Missouri, and LSU.
It remains to be seen if Williams’ acquisition significantly improves the Sooners’ situation, but it may make them more likely to prevail in games that are closer. When the Texas offense prepares for Oklahoma during the offseason, it will have an additional obstacle to overcome.
It scuttles Texas’s chance to establish itself as a serious contender.
The roster’s future is not that bad. With the addition of Arizona defensive tackles Bill Norton and Tiaoalii Savea, the pantry isn’t empty. The local players are just as talented in Austin as they are somewhere else that isn’t Georgia or Ohio State. For head coach Steve Sarkisian his team, it’s still a miss.
