Not Paul Skenes, but a pitching prospect for the Pittsburgh Pirates is making history.
According to Sarah Langs of MLB.com, his performance also placed him in several classes in team and league history:
In the pitch-tracking era, Jared Jones’ 122 swings and misses this season are the most by a pitcher in his first seven career starts (2008)
previous entry: 113 Masahiro Tanaka
h/t @JasonBernard_, the wizard
And this one as well…
With 10+ strikeouts and no walks in a game, Jared Jones, at 22 years and 272 days old, is the second-youngest Pirates pitcher since at least 1901. Older than only:
6/1/1976 John Candelaria, aged 22 and 208 days
And lastly…
52 strikeouts and 5 walks in 7 starts for Jared Jones
He is the 17th pitcher in history to have at least 50 strikeouts in his first seven career appearances.
HE IS THE FIRST OF THOSE WITH FIVE OR FEWER WALKS AND MORE THAN 50 STRIKEOUTS!
The Pittsburgh Pirates’ whole attention has been on the date of ace prospect Paul Skenes’ Major League debut in the first half of 2024.
But maybe we should all be concentrating on Jared Jones, the top prospect, who is already playing in the major leagues and he’s dominating.
On Saturday afternoon, the 22-year-old produced another outstanding outing by allowing the Colorado Rockies to score zero runs on one hit over the course of several innings. With 10 strikeouts and no walks, he reduced his season ERA to 2.63.
Despite not having played enough games to graduate off of it, Jones remains the organization’s third-ranked prospect. Skenes is without a doubt the best potential and will make his debut shortly. The Pirates will have a strong young core in the rotation when he returns.
