How the roster for Alabama football was altered during the spring transfer window
The window for the spring transfer portal has closed. Summertime football in Alabama is about to start.
For the Crimson Tide, the spring window was rather quiet in comparison to certain other times of the year. While players can still be signed and departures just need to notify UA of their plans to leave by the deadline—the paperwork can occasionally take longer—the news may not have finished coming in.
Head coach of Alabama Kalen DeBoer stated on Thursday, “There are guys that we’re working through that we will have visits or we’re trying to get them set to come to campus.” Ultimately, I believe that the direction we’re taking in terms of strengthening and enhancing the roster is positive. And that’s the main idea here.
Here’s how Alabama’s roster altered throughout the spring window as things continue to change.
departed from Alabama
TCU’s James Brockermeyer
The news of Brockermeyer’s leaving was rather unexpected. Parker Brailsford and he were vying for the starting center position for the Crimson Tide, and with Brailsford out of the picture, he appeared to have the advantage.
Rather than going to TCU, he chose to follow in the footsteps of his brother Tommy, a fellow former Crimson Tide lineman who is currently retired from football due to injuries.
Khurtiss Perry: Not sure
Perry, a Pike Road native, was a four-star prospect for Alabama’s class of 2022. He redshirted his first season with the Crimson Tide and played in just one game in 2023. He didn’t get much playing time.
Peyton Woodyard: Not sure
Woodyard, a 2024 recruiting class member for the Tide, is a true freshman. Prior to Alabama’s Rose Bowl performance, the four-star wide receiver from St. John’s Bosco in California early enrolled at Alabama.
He stayed on after UA’s coaching change from Nick Saban at first, but he decided to go through the portal at the end of the spring window.
Tony Mitchell: Not sure
Another setback for the Crimson Tide at defensive back. Mitchell became a member of the Tide in the 2023 recruiting class.
Last season, he largely made an impact on special teams. He had one tackle at the end of the season.
Become a part of Alabama
Kadyn Proctor, OL
An old acquaintance made a comeback to Tuscaloosa to support an offensive line that DeBoer said was a unit in need. After 2023, when he assumed the starting left tackle position as a true freshman, Proctor left the Tide.
Following a recruiting campaign in which the Hawkeyes self-reported a little NCAA infraction, Proctor had left for Iowa. He spent a short time with the crew before deciding to leave, returning to Alabama as soon as the gateway opened again.
K. Graham Nicholson
Will Reichard’s eligibility expired after the end of the 2023 season, meaning Alabama lost its greatest kicker of the Nick Saban years. After a competitive spring hiring process, DeBoer decided to go with a tried-and-true candidate.
Nicholson had kicked for Miami of Ohio during his previous collegiate tenure. He actually defeated Reichard, who was a candidate, to win the Lou Groza Trophy as the best kicker in the country last season.
DB Kameron Howard
DeBoer stated prior to the spring window that the Tide needed a defensive back. Although UA still has the option to sign further players through the portal, Howard’s arrival from Charlotte is the lone addition as of right now, making the 15-day window a net loss for the team.
