Rookie quarterback who was not selected claims the Steelers ‘believed’ in him the most.
This offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed experienced free agents Russell Wilson and Kyle Allen, acquired Justin Fields, and completely revamped their quarterback room.
The quarterback room appears to be set for the 2024 season, but the newest member of the group thinks he will still be around for the Steelers.
John Rhys Plumlee, an undrafted rookie quarterback, disclosed on Saturday that he had other suitors after the 2024 NFL Draft, but he ultimately decided to Pittsburgh because of the team’s faith in him.
“I had a lot of teams calling, but I felt like Pittsburgh was the right spot and I felt like they believed in me,” Plumlee stated.
To make the Steelers’ 53-man roster, Plumlee will need to defeat Allen in training camp for the position of No. 3 quarterback. This won’t be an easy feat, though, as Allen has established himself as a reliable backup on his fifth team in the NFL.
Nevertheless, Plumlee turns the role on its head. He has rushed for 1,367 yards and 16 touchdowns at UCF over the previous two years in addition to throwing for 4,857 yards and 29 touchdowns.
Plumlee is fortunate in that he has a long way to go before making such selections, and he is eager to take in knowledge from Fields, Wilson, and Allen soon.
“I haven’t got to talk to them yet, but looking forward to meeting those guys and learning from them and getting to work with them,” Plumlee said.
For a rookie, it might be intimidating to be in a quarterback room with players of Pittsburgh’s calibre, but Plumlee is excited to play with guys he has long admired.
With a “I’m super excited,” Plumlee concluded. “When I was younger, I looked up to those boys who played football. Extremely thrilled about the chance.”
