Rookie quarterback who was not selected claims the Steelers ‘believed’ in him the most.
With the addition of Justin Fields and the acquisition of veteran free agents Russell Wilson and Kyle Allen, the Pittsburgh Steelers have overhauled their quarterback room entirely this summer.
Although the quarterback room appears to be set for the 2024 season, the newest member of the group thinks the Steelers have him in mind for the future.
After the 2024 NFL Draft, undrafted rookie quarterback John Rhys Plumlee disclosed on Saturday that he was approached by multiple teams, but he ultimately choose Pittsburgh because of the team’s faith in him.
“I had a lot of teams calling, but I felt like Pittsburgh was the right spot and I felt like they believed in me,” Plumlee stated.
To make the Steelers’ 53-man roster, Plumlee will need to defeat Allen in training camp for the position of No. 3 quarterback. This won’t be an easy feat, though, as Allen has established himself as a reliable backup on his fifth team in the NFL.
Nevertheless, Plumlee turns the role on its head. He has rushed for 1,367 yards and 16 touchdowns at UCF over the previous two years in addition to throwing for 4,857 yards and 29 touchdowns.
Plumlee is fortunate that those choices have not yet been decided, and he anticipates studying with Fields, Wilson, and Allen soon.
“I haven’t got to talk to them yet, but looking forward to meeting those guys and learning from them and getting to work with them,” Plumlee stated.
A rookie quarterback may find it intimidating to be in the same room as players as good as Pittsburgh’s, but Plumlee is excited to play with guys he has long admired.
Plumlee concluded, “I’m very excited.” “Those are some football players that I looked up to when I was younger. Extremely happy for the chance.”
