Bears coach Matt Eberflus gives update on quarterback Caleb Williams’ development.
Caleb Williams, the rookie quarterback for the Chicago Bears, seems to be ahead of schedule.
Before choosing Williams with the first overall choice in the draft, the Bears reportedly offered his personal quarterback coach, Will Hewlett, footwork and cadences to work on. This information was published by Josh Schrock of NBC Sports Chicago.
The novice seems to have completed the task with diligence.
Bears quarterback coach Kerry Joseph stated on Saturday, via Schrock, “Will did a great job with him of prepping him for what we’re about to do now.” “Coming into this mini-camp, he was light years ahead of the information that he already had.”
Prior to rookie minicamp, Williams was named the starting quarterback by the Bears. The 22-year-old already has a strong work ethic, which is ideal for Chicago.
Williams appeared to be in good shape on the first day of mini-camp, according to Schrock, despite missing a few throws. That won’t, however, decide if he succeeds in the league. Shane Waldron, the new offensive coordinator for the Bears, recognised that he and the coaching staff need to establish the right atmosphere.
According to Schrock, Waldron stated on Saturday, “I think for me, the things we’re pouring into him right now is just the understanding of the big picture of the game.” “For me, also being able to lean on Kerry Joseph and the rest of the offensive staff, to me, this is always a collaborative effort, and it’s going to take all of us to help him along the way, and everyone has great individual strengths that they can bring to the table.”
The Bears have never had a quarterback throw for 4,000 yards or more in a season, but Chicago is learning from its previous errors and setting up Williams for success. In the offseason, it selected Washington’s Rome Odunze with the ninth overall pick and signed six-time Pro Bowl wide out Keenan Allen.
Williams, the 2022 Heisman winner, has the greatest Offensive Rookie of the Year odds (+170) as of Monday, according to FanDuel.
