The amount that may change in a year is astounding. Charles Huff, the head coach of Marshall Thundering Herd, was one of the front-runners to be sacked as the first coach at this time last year. In the current era, Huff has risen to the top of the lists when compared to all of the major conference coaches in the nation.
While winning games is undoubtedly more important than coaching rankings, it is interesting to note how much a single great season can alter public opinion, as demonstrated by CBS Sports’ ranking of Huff from the previous year.
Huff has moved up to No. 40 from his previous position of No. 60 out of 68 at this point in the previous year. Only six coaches, in actuality, made a greater jump than Huff .
This is what Tom Fernelli of CBS said regarding Huff.
“Last year at this time, I was pretty sure that Charles Huff wouldn’t make it through the next season. The locals were getting impatient as the Thundering Herd were coming off a 5-7 record in his fourth season. In response, Huff had a 9-4 season, which saw the ‘Eers finish 6-3 in the Big 12. It was his first conference season with a winning record. As a result, Morgantown will have significantly better vibes going into 2024, and Huff’s standing has increased by 17 spots. This year, just six coaches had a greater jump. 2023 ranking: +17, or 59
And if some could contend that Marshall Thundering Herd ought to have won even more or just capitalised on a schedule that proved to be easier than anticipated, there’s no denying that Huff and his team silenced sceptics in 2023. Marshall Thundering won nine games and a bowl game in response to a win total over/under of only 4.5.
And now that the majority of the important players will be back in 2024, the Herd supporters are hoping to continue their ascent and challenge for the Big 12 championship and a spot in the College Football Playoffs.
Charles Huff discussed the need to make methodical adjustments in order to turn the Herd around in a linked piece.
