CBB Coaches and Insiders Share NIL Transfer Costs; Up to $2M for Premium Players……………………..
Numerous prominent players have switched teams using the men’s college basketball transfer portal. These players include AAC co-Player of the Year Johnell Davis (FAU to Arkansas), Second-team All-Big Ten wing AJ Storr (Wisconsin to Kansas), and First-team All-Big East point guard Kadary Richmond (Seton Hall to St. John’s).
The precise amount that transfers are paid through NIL (name, image, and likeness) is unknown, but Kyle Tucker of The Athletic was informed by anonymous sources—including two head coaches and a “behind-the-scenes power broker”—that the sum is well into the seven figures, if not higher.
“First: $250,000 to $300,000.” Conference-wide: $5000-$750,000. Elevated: between $800,000 and $2 million,” stated an insider.
The five individuals who provided information to The Athletic all stated that starting salaries were at least $200,000, and that all conference players made at least a half million dollars.
As to one source, it depends on one’s status. “An all-conference guard may cost between $450,000 and $600,000, and as they become more in demand, between $600,000 and $800,000. Big men now make over $1 million, compared to $600,000-plus for an all-conference player.”
With his figures, one of the sources was rather high.
“First: $500,000.” $800,000–$1 million for the entire conference. Highest guys: More than $1 million. A few teams are also going crazy with the money in the gateway.”
It’s reasonable to venture some estimates as to which teams those are. “Baylor, Arkansas, and Louisville have helped the market,” an insider told The Athletic. Another source cited the same three players but also mentioned Indiana, Alabama, and Kentucky as the largest offseason spenders.
Those schools have all gained popularity on the transfer portal. Aside from the players already mentioned, big man Oumar Bello made headlines when he moved from Arizona to Indiana, Miami forward Norchad Omier, Duke guard Jeremy Roach, and Rutgers centre Clifford Omoruyi joined the Crimson Tide.
