Keeps it hot as William Contreras leads the Brewers past the Astros….
With a three-run home run to end a four-run fifth inning, William Contreras gave the visiting Milwaukee Brewers an interleague victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday, 4-2.
Convergas, who came into Saturday ranked second in the National League in runs (39) and batting average (.353), defeated experienced right-hander Justin Verlander of the Astros (2-2) to extend his on-base streak to 25 games.
Contreras threw away seven straight pitches, including four straight four-seam fastballs, before hitting his 13th pitch 428 feet. With two outs and his eighth home run of the year, he scored Sal Frelick and Jackson Chourio to give the Brewers a 4-1 lead.
After retiring the Brewers in order in the first, second, and fourth innings, Verlander entered the fifth inning with 56 pitches in his repertoire. However, Milwaukee forced him to work hard in that inning, beginning with a single by Joey Ortiz in the leadoff position and working consecutive walks to Frelick and Chourio. Ortiz was scored by Blake Perkins’ sacrifice fly to left, tying the game at one.
Two batters later, Contreras struck out the first batter. Over 4 2/3 innings, Verlander gave up four runs on four hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. 42 of his 98 pitches came in the fifth inning.
The Astros’ six-game winning streak was snapped, partly because of their incapacity to overcome Brewers starter Bryse Wilson and the skill of the four relievers who came in after.
For the first two innings, Wilson faced the minimum. Wilson stranded runners at second and third and retired the Astros in order in the fourth inning after giving up consecutive one-out singles to Jake Meyers and Mauricio Dubon in the third. Meyers (3-for-4) scored on the Dubon hit after moving to second on a wild pitch.
However, Wilson left the game two batters after giving up a solo home run to Meyers in the fifth on a single with two outs to Jose Altuve in left field. To end the fifth, Hoby Milner (2-0) entered the game and retired Tucker. After that, Elvis Peguero, Bryan Hudson, and Trevor Megill shut out the Astros over the next 4 1/3 innings.
After working around a single in the ninth inning and striking out the side, Megill recorded his sixth save.
