Paul Skenes joins the Pirates before making his major league debut….
Pittsburgh (AP) — Officially, Paul Skenes is a big leaguer.
The hard-throwing right-hander, who was selected first overall in the previous amateur draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, was added to the team on Saturday before Skenes’ start against the Chicago Cubs.
At Triple-A Indianapolis, Skenes was dominant, going 7–0 with a 0.99 ERA in his starts.
The Pirates assigned right-hander Roansy Contreras to a platoon in order to accommodate Skenes. Contreras was out of options after struggling for the majority of the previous two seasons and being acquired as part of the transaction that sent pitcher Jameson Taillon to the New York Yankees in January 2021.
Throughout the majority of his first three seasons as a starter, Contreras, 24, has spent this season working out of the bullpen. In 12 games, he has a 4.41 ERA and a 1-0 record.
Additionally, because to back issues, third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes of the Pirates was placed on the injured list. Prior to this Saturday, Hayes had missed Pittsburgh’s previous two games. Alika Williams, an infielder, was recalled by the Rangers from Triple-A to fill Hayes’s position.
