The Red Sox duo may begin a “bidding war” at the trade deadline if Boston decides to sell.
This summer, will the Red Sox attempt to add players to their roster or will they try to offload them?
The Boston Red Sox will have to make some tough decisions during the coming months.
Even though May is still in the air, the trade deadline is drawing near. It will pass by the end of July, and at this point, nobody knows what the Red Sox will do. Boston may choose to make player acquisitions if it still has a chance to make the playoffs, or it may opt to have an intriguing sell-off if things don’t work out.
Pitchers Chris Martin and Kenley Jansen might begin a “bidding war,” as noted by Sean McAdam of MassLive.com.
Many things could happen in the following sixty games, predicts McAdam. “If they determine they’re not in a position to add, the Red Sox could have a number of players who would generate a lot of interest, including outfielder Tyler O’Neill, starter Nick Pivetta, set-up man Chris Martin, and closer Kenley Jansen. The only players who can leave on their own are O’Neill and Pivetta, and the team may decide to have them sign new contracts.
“In particular, a combination that has shown success in October, like Jansen and Martin, might spark a bidding war among rivals. Hopefully, the chosen path will be pursued with a bit more intention and clarity than the preceding few seasons.”
Both Jansen and Martin have previously been linked to trade rumors, so it wouldn’t be odd to see them play elsewhere if the Red Sox aren’t contending for a postseason position this summer.
