In the history of the program, Luke Barker is the 19th head football coach at Fairmont State University.
As the new head football coach at Fairmont State, Greg Bamberger said, “We are excited to have Coach Barker join our team.” “He has an exceptional background serving as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at the University of Charleston and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. We know he will bring excitement and energy to our team, and we can’t wait to see what he can do as Falcon Football’s head coach.
With a lengthy tenure in the Mountain East Conference, Barker most recently served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Charleston. During his tenure with the Golden Eagles, he coached eight different All-MEC players, including the 2021 and 2023 Offensive Player of the Year.
Mikel Davis, the president of Fairmont State University, says Luke Barker is a welcome addition to the Falcon Family. “I’m thrilled to watch the team flourish under Luke’s leadership. When I spoke with Luke throughout the interview process, he expressed his desire to truly collaborate with the community on the work that Fairmont State is doing.
To the Fairmont State teachers, staff, and community members that took part in this search committee, I would want to thank you. I am aware of how competitive the pool was, and we value their commitment to Fairmont State University and the process,” Davis continued.
The team went 27-10 in his three years at Charleston, won the conference in 2023, and made it to the super region round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Barker’s offense led the conference in a variety of categories last season, including total yards, total touchdowns, first downs, running touchdowns, and scoring.
“My family and I are extremely excited to be joining the Fairmont State University community,” Barker said. We are excited to be a part of this amazing university and close-knit community. I’m grateful for all of the assistance that Dr. Davis and Greg Bamberger have provided, and I’m eager to collaborate with them both going forward.
Barker was the associate head coach and coach of the running backs and tight ends at Indiana University of Pennsylvania before to heading to Charleston. IUP made four trips to the NCAA Division II Playoffs and advanced to the national semifinals in 2017, finishing 50-11 over the course of six seasons.
Barker arrived at IUP from West Virginia’s Wesleyan College. During his two seasons with the Bobcats, he served as running backs coach and special teams coach under George Shehl.
Barker spent his two years at Wesleyan working with rookie running back Michael Anderson. In his combined first and second seasons, Anderson gained 1,156 yards and seven touchdowns through the air. 2014 saw Anderson excel as a receiving threat out of the backfield, where he grabbed 42 receptions for 416 yards.
“We want to build a successful program both on and off the field,” Barker declared. “Our goal is to support exceptional individuals in their growth and in creating lasting connections with the Fairmont community.” We want to be the best in all we do!
