For the HC post, Todd McLellan interviews with two more teams…………
According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic, Todd McLellan has now interviewed for head coaching positions with the Devils and Jets in addition to his prior relationships with the Kraken and Maple Leafs.
Although he isn’t thought to be the obvious favorite for any of the four positions he is evaluating, interest in his abilities is rising as the number of league-wide opportunities declines. While Sheldon Keefe seems to be the Devils’ top choice, he is seen as the Maple Leafs’ backup option to Craig Berube (and possibly Rod Brind’Amour). McLellan is the second external candidate to interview for the Winnipeg position this week, following Berube, and the only one who has been clearly linked to the Seattle opening thus far.
Other than McLellan’s previous squad, the Sharks are the only other team with a spot available, but they have no record interest in rehiring McLellan for a second term in the bench. His first NHL head coaching opportunity came in San Jose, when he amassed an incredible 311-163-66 (.637) regular season record but was unable to make it to the Stanley Cup Final. The year following McLellan’s firing, the Sharks made their one and only Finals appearance in franchise history.
McLellan is ranked 24th on the all-time victories list with a 598-412-134 (.581) record in 1,144 career games as a coach for the Kings, Oilers, and Sharks. Even yet, his record in the playoffs is below.500 (42-46).
The Jets are considering internal promotion for associate coach Scott Arniel in addition to Berube and McLellan. He took a backseat during the two leaves of absence this season taken by the now-retired Rick Bowness.
