The Broncos had first-round grades on six quarterbacks, including Nix, according to general manager George Paton. Paton and Payton also stated that Nix was the team’s top target early in the draft process.
Nix’s on-field work has officially started with minicamp, as has the clock surrounding Nix, Payton, and the Broncos on when he will play.
“You listen to [Payton] when he speaks; he has established a reputation,” Nix remarked. It can be a lot, but I believe I’m receiving excellent instruction. They’re done an excellent job of streamlining everything and making it easy for me to understand so I can play quickly.
Nix is the first quarterback a Payton-coached team has selected in the first round of a draft. How Payton handles a quarterback competition involving a rookie is as unknown as who will start between Nix, Stidham and Wilson.
Payton has already lauded Nix’s maturity, decision-making, accuracy and composure as the Broncos progress through OTAs later this month and mandatory minicamp in mid-June. After two full practices in minicamp, Payton gave Nix a favorable review.
Payton remarked, “It’s almost like watching a good golfer.” When you watch his play over a period of two years, you can sometimes see that he plays patiently. The ball emerges, and—I don’t want to call it dull; that’s not the appropriate word—pretty wise choices are made. With every play, the effectiveness of his methods, and everything else. It might be difficult to learn huddle, snap count, and terminology when it’s your first time, but I felt he did a good job throwing it.
Nix, who played three seasons at Auburn and two at Oregon, requested the assistance of former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers in his transition to the league in addition to all of his other draft preparation. Nix, an Alabama native from Pinson, claimed to have worked with
“He is far more knowledgeable than I am,” Nix remarked. “He didn’t have to do that; it was impressive just how willing he was.”
Payton was patient with the initial inquiries regarding Nix’s play in a single session and its overall significance, considering that it is just May. However, Nix discovers how important the quarterback position is to Denver, and Payton also threw doubt on any assumptions about how things could appear when the team makes more appearances in public during training camp.
When questioned at minicamp about how he would divide up the labor in training camp, Payton responded, “We’ll figure it out.” “… repetitions are crucial when working with young guys. However, after a rotation, we’ll make our next move.
