Diamondbacks’ Zac Gallen Placed on 15-Day IL With Hamstring Injury Sustained vs. Mets
The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed starting pitcher Zac Gallen on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, according to the Associated Press (via ESPN).
Gallen left Thursday’s game against the New York Mets after six pitches and returned to Arizona on Friday for an MRI and examinations from team doctors.
The seven-year veteran has a 3.12 ERA, 60 strikeouts in 57.2 innings pitched. He has a 5–4 record in 11 starts. Gallen has emerged as a prominent NL pitcher, finishing in the top five in Cy Young Award voting the last two seasons. He’s coming off a 17-9 season with a 3.47 ERA across 210 innings.
With Gallen in the IL, the Diamondbacks called up right-handed starter Slade Cecconi. The 24-year-old has participated in six games this season, going 1-4 with a 6.12 ERA in 32.1 innings pitched.
Coming off their first World Series appearance since 2001, the Diamondbacks have struggled early this season. Arizona is now 25-32, fourth in the NL West, having lost six of its past seven games.
Gallen’s injury adds to the growing number of rotation players sidelined. Merrill Kelly has been out since April 15 with a strained right shoulder, and Eduardo Rodriguez has yet to play this season due to a strained left shoulder.
