Despite expectations that they might choose a quarterback, the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to strengthen their quarterback position by signing John Rhys Plumlee, a dynamic undrafted free agent from the University of Central Florida. This acquisition was completed shortly after the NFL draft on April 27. Plumlee, who signed with the Steelers on Saturday, has a diversified athletic background. During his college football career, he played quarterback and wide receiver, as well as outfield for the UCF baseball team. His adaptability to numerous roles increases his worth to the Steelers.
Plumlee is slated to be the fourth quarterback option at training camp, trailing only Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen. According to Alan Saunders of Steelers Now, Plumlee has the potential to land on the practice squad, where his athleticism may be used in a variety of ways. Plumlee began his college career as a 3-star recruit for Ole Miss in 2019 and has continually showed his athletic ability. After transferring to UCF following the 2021 season, he resumed his quarterback duties and delivered a great performance.
In 2022, he had 2,586 passing yards and 862 running yards, resulting in 14 passing touchdowns and 11 rushing touchdowns. In 2023, he recorded 2,271 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and an 8.9 yards per attempt average, as well as 505 rushing yards and 5 extra scores. Alex Kozora of Steelers Depot commented on Plumlee’s potential, highlighting his promising deep-ball capability and stating, “He may not have a powerful arm, but his precision and ability to expose defences with well-timed passes demonstrate his aptitude. He has a penchant for letting his receivers make big plays.”
Plumlee’s primary goal with the Steelers will be to compete for a position on the practice squad, exploiting his unique skill set and diversified athletic background.
