Providence basketball’s Garwey Dual is leaving for a Big East rival. Where’s he going?
Garwey Dual is moving to a rival Big East school from Providence.
After registering on the transfer site in early April, the highly sought-after men’s basketball backcourt recruit has decided to attend Seton Hall. The news was initially reported on social media by CBS Sports.
Dual was a member of the Friars for one season, making 33 appearances, six of which were starts. In a 21–14 campaign, he averaged 3.3 points and 1.9 assists, assisting Providence in making it to the NIT. He will still be eligible to play for the Pirates for three seasons.
While using the transfer portal, Dual allegedly communicated with Seton Hall, Georgia, Grand Canyon, UC Santa Barbara, Texas A&M, BYU, and Memphis. The 6-foot-5 guard thought about going pro and playing in the NBA G League as well. Before the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago last month, he went to the organization’s elite camp.
The Friars were dual selected before rumored offers from league rivals DePaul, Butler, Georgetown, Arizona State, TCU, Dayton, and North Carolina State. He attended Indiana for the 2021–22 prep season, then in June 2022, he paid Providence an official visit. The Friars had just advanced to the Sweet 16 and won their first conference regular-season championship.
When Dual, a consensus top-50 prospect from his hometown, made his commitment to Providence, previous coach Ed Cooley was still in control. When Cooley unexpectedly joined the Hoyas, Dual reopened his recruiting, and one of Kim English’s first official days on the Friars’ payroll was a cross-country travel to Los Angeles.
Three players at Southern California Academy, Donovan Santoro, a wing forward, and Drew Fielder, a power forward, were guys that English was aiming to get committed to Providence.
Although English finished the trip with a 2-for-3 record, none of those players will be on his roster in 2024–2025. After spending just one season with the Friars, Santoro had previously announced his move to Green Bay, and Fielder had followed Cooley to Georgetown. According to reports, the Phoenix will play a nonconference game at Amica Mutual Pavilion in November of the following year.
In a November home victory over Milwaukee, Dual scored 14 points, but he never again scored in double figures. Poor shooting and a lack of opportunities hindered his offensive output. Dual had a field goal percentage of just 33.1% and a 3-point percentage of 14 for 56.
When it came to defensive spurts, Dual was far more effective. He had seven assists and a plus-25 rating in 23 minutes, which helped lead to a home upset victory against Marquette in December. When it came to steals and blocked shots, Dual placed fourth and fifth on the squad, respectively.
The final transfer from Providence to find housing was Dual. He left the NBA Draft before the deadline on May 29 in order to maintain his eligibility. Rafael Castro stays with the Revolutionaries for two years after making a prior commitment to George Washington.
One scholarship is still available for the upcoming season at the Friars, and English and assistant coach Nate Tomlinson posted on social media that Providence’s recruitment is complete. Wesley Cardet Jr. from Chicago State, Christ Essandoko from Saint Joseph’s, Bensley Joseph from Miami, and Jabri Abdur-Rahim from Georgia all made commitments to the Friars through the portal.
Wing for freshmen Ryan Mela has arrived on campus for summer workouts, while Oswin Erhunmwunse, a 2025 commit, has the option to reclassify and play for Providence the following year.
