Michael Wacha keeps the Angels in check as the Royals win…………
The Kansas City Royals defeated the Los Angeles Angels 10–4 on Thursday night in Anaheim, California, led by home runs from Vinnie Pasquantino and Dairon Blanco, who continued to master the Angels.
Wacha was chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2012 draft, having been awarded the pick by the Angels in exchange for signing free agent Albert Pujols. Since then, Wacha has made the Angels pay.
With one of his two career shutouts, Wacha came into the game with a 3-0 record and a 0.44 ERA versus the Angels. Wacha (2-4) was excellent despite his problems this season, keeping the Angels scoreless until the seventh inning of the first game in a four-game series.
Kansas City had accumulated a 9-0 advantage by that point. The Royals offence collected 12 hits, with Maikel Garcia having three hits, scoring twice and driving in two; Pasquantino homering, doubleing, scoring twice and driving in three; and Blanco having three hits, including a home run, scoring four times and driving in two.
The majority of the damage was done to Reid Detmers, the Angels’ starter, who had a great start to the season before hitting a rocky patch. After going 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA in his first four appearances, Detmers has lost all four of his subsequent starts and hasn’t won since.
Detmers (3-4) made 90 pitches, struck out five, and gave up six runs on seven hits and two walks in five innings.
Through six innings, Wacha gave up just one hit, a single by Logan O’Hoppe in the fourth.
Thanks to a mistake by Garcia in the seventh inning, the Angels were able to score three runs on walks to Luis Guillorme and Cole Tucker, as well as a sacrifice fly by Nolan Schanuel.
Wacha threw six extra innings, striking out six and using 103 pitches while giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and five walks.
Three of the Royals’ four games have ended in victories. The Royals established the tone early in the third inning with two home runs each from Blanco and Pasquantino.
